The headstone of Albert Ernest and Annie Maria Woodward (nee Oliver) at St James the Great in Stonesfield - sadly time has made it quite difficult to read, but exactly as Jane has posted below it says 'ALBERT WOODWARD died Aug 26th 1945 aged 80 years. Come unto me ye weary and I will give you rest. Also ANNIE his wife died Oct 27 1951 aged 88 years. Reunited.

Hello again Bonnie

I've just got back to Oxfordshire after several months away (in lockdown with my parents). Unfortunately I don't drive otherwise I'd go over to Stonesfield myself to look for the gravestone.

If you are on Facebook I suggest you join the 'Memories of Stonesfield' private group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/191256608003263

Many Stonesfield folk belong to the group and perhaps someone there would be able to visit the churchyard for you. I would highly recommend joining the group which is packed with information on the village's history and includes lots of old photographs and reminiscences.

If you're not on Facebook I could post a message to the group on your behalf.

Good luck!

Jane

I will keep my fingers crossed that someone will be able to get a picture of Albert and Annie Woodward’s headstone for me.

Hello Bonnie and welcome! it's good to see a new member here on the forum

Shane's photograph of Albert and Hannah's gravestone can be found in this post:

https://oliverfamilyhistory.activeboard.com/t41771935/legible-oliver-gravestones-for-four-consecutive-generations-/

The memorial is also listed in a booklet called 'A record of the known graves and memorials in the church of St James the Great, in the churchyard and on the War Memorial at Stonesfield' by Richard Chancellor (published in 1994).

Row Z, no. 16
[Headstone] "In loving memory of HANNAH OLIVER wife of ALBERT OLIVER who died April 13th 1913 aged 72 years. Thy will be done. Also of ALBERT OLIVER who died April 17th 1917 aged 76 years. His end was peace.'
[Footstone] H.O. 1913 A.O. 1917

Now to the Woodwards. With Albert Woodward's address being given as Long Hanborough in the National Probate Calendar, and his widow's as Stratton St Margaret, I wasn't expecting to find them in Stonesfield . . . but they are there!

Row G, nos 19 & 20
"ALBERT WOODWARD died Aug 26th 1945 aged 80 years. Come unto me ye weary and I will give you rest. Also ANNIE his wife died Oct 27 1951 aged 88 years. Reunited."

There's no sign of Solomon Oliver in the index, I'm afraid, so if he does have a surviving headstone then the inscription must have been illegible by the time the churchyard survey was done.

I suppose there must be a numbered plan to go with the booklet. I can't remember if I ever had a copy but will have a hunt around on my laptop just in case. Then all we need is someone with a camera to go up to the churchyard . . .

Hope that helps

Jane

P.S. Though I do have Oliver ancestors they're not connected with the Stonesfield ones as far as I know. But I've watched Shane's Oliver tree grow from a tiny acorn and love to see it flourish and blossom. Besides that I'm an incurable genealogy addict!

Hi, does anyone have any pictures of Albert Ernest or Annie Maria (Oliver) Woodward‘s headstone(s)? I would also be interested in Albert and Hannah Oliver along with Solomon and Maria’s headstone pictures. I have had no luck on “find a grave” website...thanks!
