Hey Sharon,

Fantastic to read your posts here, thanks so much joining the messageboard and sharing that information.

What a fantastic milestone Kathleen has reached, and yes the pictures certainly do portray and happy, kind and life-loving lady - and its clear she is very special to you.

Thanks for providing all those clarifications, its great to have made contact with a descendant from Hubert's family line - you might also be interested to read this thread and view some of the pictures http://oliverfamilyhistory.activeboard.com/t43026728/the-sad-story-of-hetty-may-bayliss-then-the-bayliss-family-t/ of your English/English born ancestors even further back than Hubert.

It would of course also be lovely to see a picture of Hubert/Hubert and Kathleen togther/Hubert, Kathleen and family together and possibly add then into the gallery of wonderful family pictures on the website www.OliverFamilyHistory.co.uk here if you would be happy to share one.

Hope we can talk some more Sharon, thanks for now,

Shane

I recall stories of an Uncle Bill... I think he would come and visit Hubert and Kathleen, traveling in his motor home? I'll ask my mother.

Hello all,

The beautiful young woman holding the flowering tree is indeed Kathleen May (Tinkler) Bayliss, my grandmother, devoted wife of Hubert George Oliver Bayliss (son of William Albert Bayliss and Mary Elizabeth Birch), mother to Hetty Evelyn Rimmer (my mother) and Eileen Moores, daughter of Abraham Arthur Tinkler and Annie Evelyn Kilroy. She was always called Kathleen, never Kath. The older picture shown in Shane's post is also her, in her 80's I'm guessing. She turned 100 this past July. She moved from Kelowna, BC her home for 50+ years until her late 90's, to live briefly with my Auntie Eileen in Halifax, NS. Now she resides in assisted living in Halifax. Can you tell from her face what a beautiful, loving and kind person she is? I love my Grandma!

Sharon in Maryland

Hi Jane,

Wow, what a wonderful amount new information from the Seventh-Day Adventist archives, this branch of the tree is really sprouting!

I wonder if this is Terry who married Holly, granddaughter of Hubert? Seems to have several links with Berrien Springs where they married.

Thanks,
Shane

A few more bits and bobs:

The Messenger of December 1989 reported that Martin and Eileen Moores 'with their three daughters, Heather, Holly, and Merrilee', were joining the Maritime Conference staff.  'For 19 years the Moores served in Africa and the Far East before coming to the Maritimes, residing in Moncton.'

Eileen M. Moores and Robert M. Moores are listed as Board Members of the Tantallon Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada.

Their daughter Holly married Terry Pratt, 1995, Berrien Springs, MI according to the Messenger of August 1995.

Thanks to more of the Seventh-Day Adventist archives we can now fill in a date of death and burial place for Hubert.

In the obituaries section of the 'Messenger', December 1989:

BAYLISS - Hubert George Oliver Bayliss was born on January 4, 1907 in Stonesfield, Oxfordshire, England.  Upon immigrating to Canada he lived in Victoria, BC and as a young adult gave his heart to Jesus and was baptized.  On January 7, 1942 he was married to Kathleen Tinkler and to their union two daughters, Hetty and Eileen were born.

Hubert died on September 30, 1989, at the age of 82, at Kelowna, BC.  Left to mourn his passing: his loving companion Kathleen; daughters Hetty Rimmer and Eileen Moores; and one sister.

Funeral service was conducted by Pastor Marvin Suiter, Pastor Walter Bergey, and Pastor Dan Jackson at the Orchard City Seventh-day Adventist Church in Kelowna, BC.  Interment followed at the Kelowna City Cemetery.

This is from somewhere on the www.adventistarchives.org site.  (Sorry I can't give the full website address: for some reason I cannot open any of these Adventist PDFs so am having to view HTML versions.)

Following up on Jane finding the below:

It's from the Canadian Union Messenger, Vol. 45, No. 20, October 15, 1976

(The 'official organ of the Canadian Union Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church'), which I found by searching for "Hubert Bayliss" and "Tinkler".

Three Cousins Leave for Mission Service in Africa

'Three grandchildren of Arthur Tinkler of Kelowna, British Columbia, left at the end of August for mission service in Africa, - Eileen Moores, Joyce Van Scheik and Don Abbey.

Eileen Moores is the daughter of Kathleen (Tinkler) and Hubert Bayliss of Kelowna, B.C.  Her husband is Robert Martin Moores whose parents live at South River, Ontario.  Eileen and Martin with their three daughters are returning to Nairobi, Kenya, where Martin is treasurer of the East Africa Union Conference.  They have spent the past six years there in the mission field...'

Perhaps this will give a few new leads . . .

I have also just located the following:

I think you're right Jane, I think there are plenty more leads and lots more information to be gatherd here about the Tinklers and Moores and Huberts branch.

Thanks for this,
Shane

Hi Maria,

Thanks so much for sharing this information, its been really nice to read through and see how the branches of the family grew. The pictures are super, so nice to put a face to 'the pioneer' Bill Bayliss after all this time.

The 50th Wedding Anniversary photo is wonderful, so many of the family together.

Shocking of course to read about Robin, as you say this must have rocked the family immensely.

I had a fresh look at that picture I posted who I though might have been Mary Bayliss (nee Birch). I didn't think it looked like Mary/Bessie in the pictures you posted. I dug a bit more a found some further notes, and yesterday you filled another blank and told me that Hubert married a Kathleen Tinkler. I found some references to a 'Kath' associated with the picture so I think the lady in the picture is actually Kath Bayliss, wife of Hubert, not Mary Bayliss, wife of Bill.

Here is who I think is Kath, younger and older:

kathbayliss.jpg

Do you know if Bill kept in contact with his brothers and sisters and their families at all, Hubert and Kath, Beulah who married and became a Varker, Lily who married and became an Eytel?

Thanks again,
Shane

David Bayliss' children are as follows:

Linda Lorelei b. 28 July 1960

Robin b. 19 April 1962  d. 19 August 1988 Hawaii

Neil David William b. 2 Oct 1964

Karen Elizabeth b. 26 Aug 1968?

As far as I know this remained an unsolved murder. They figured she was stabbed in the head with a screwdriver. I don't believe any charges were ever made. This rocked the whole family.

The information you have about Bill Bayliss' children and their spouses is correct, as far as I know.

Joyce (known as Jay) married Jack Birney.  He was a lawyer practicing in Vancouver, BC. They rented a summer house year-round on Saltspring Island while their children were growing up and when they retired they moved to Saltspring Island and built a house there. Their kids names are Marilee, Brent, Paul, Rosemary, and Patricia born between 1949 and about 1960.

Patricia married Fred Smith.  He worked for his father-in-law at Bayliss Signs and then moved on to become the senior vice-president of Neon Products, a Jim Pattison Sign Company, the largest sign company in Canada.  Their kids names are Gail/Gaylon and Joanne, born in the mid 1950s.

Dave Bayliss married Leslie Ball. He took over running Bayliss Neon from his father. Their kids names are Linda, Robin, Neil and Karen.  Robin was murdered in Hawaii in 1988.

more later....

Shane, I can't say for sure if that is her or not. She was so much older in the photos I have.  This photo is of Mary Elizabeth Birch known as Bessie and William Albert Bayliss, with their newborn grandson, Reid Gavin Thorburn, in August 1958.

Hi Maria,

The following picture was passed to me by someone in the UK, but they didn't know who it was. Well, I had also previously received a colour picture of a lady from circa the 1970's which did have a name, and I beleive the below to be the same lady, only younger of course.

I'm wondering if you might be able to validate this as Mary Elizabeth Bayliss (nee Birch)?

?????

Thanks for now,
Shane

Hi Maria,

I had made contact with Blair Thorburn through the Devlin website maybe 2 years ago and as a result had a very brief telephone conversation with his sister Lynne (both your inlaws I now see).

She gave me some information on the possible marriages of Joyce, Patricia and David, the other children of William and Mary:

Joyce Hettie b. 22 April 1924
>Married William Jack Birney, had 3 girls and 2 boys

Patricia Joan b. 26 December 1928
>Married Fred Smith, had 2 girls

David William Joseph b. 12 April 1930
>Married Leslie Ball, had 3 girls and 1 boy

Would be interested to know if this all adds up with your information?

Thanks,
Shane
