Thanks Jane

I think the photo may be my Grandfathers brother but I'm really clutching at straws. I thought if I could find out what the uniform was it might give me a lead.

I know my Grandfather was in the Boer War and also in India and was told that he left home with one of his brothers and joined the Army.  Which brother I don't know as he had three brothers and two half brothers.  I have been able to find Naval records for his two half brothers but nothing for my Grandfather in the Army records.  The name is quite common too - Rogers - so that doesn't help.

I'll try the forum Irene suggested.

Thank you all for your suggestions - Linda

Sorry, Linda . . . I can't live up to Shane's expectations, I'm afraid and have no idea on what regiment that might be.  At first I saw the ribbons and thought "Aha! He's wearing a glengarry . . . must be a Scottish regiment", but now I've done a bit of reading I see that many regiments wore this type of headdress.

You really need a military expert.  Try the forum Irene suggested.  I'll ask my fellow volunteer at the museum too, in case he knows of any useful sources.  I'm hoping to get to Kew later this month so could also have a look in some of their military books then if no-one else has provided an answer.

Perhaps army records might shed some light on the matter?  Have you tried looking up your relative(s) in the pre-1914 military records on Findmypast?  There's access to this in Oxfordshire libraries.

Hi Linda,

Nice photo, if this is a military uniform I'm positive that it can be identified. There are two or three very good military/war forums out there that have these sorts of questions posed all the time and there are experts out there that would know on the spot I'm sure.

If Jane doesn't know herself (and it wouldn't surprise me if she did!) I do know that she is active with many of these forums so she may well be able to help, but also, I think Jane has a colleague at the Witney and District museum that is a bit knowledgeable in these things.

I'll do some googling but all I can do at the moment with any certianly is swizz the picture around for you I'm afraid!

Thanks
Shane

Hi Linda,

Have you tried the Victorian War Forum?  Just google Vic.WarForum and that should give it to you.  They were brilliant when I was trying to find out the Regiment of my husband`s Grandfather.  He was born in 1854 and all we had was a `scabby` photo of him.

Best of luck,   Irene

Does anyone have any knowledge of military uniforms?  I'm attaching a photo which I found in the 'suitcase' of photographs inherited from my Mum.  I have no idea who this man is but think it could be my Grandfathers brother (not an Oliver).

I think the photo may be a mirror image as the buttons seem to be on the wrong side.

I've looked through various books and on the internet without any success.

My Grandfather was born in 1878 and he had three brothers born: 1874,1877 and 1882.  I know that my Grandfather was in the Boer War but I don't now what regiment.  I have no information at all about his brothers.

Anyone have any ideas?B3.Unknown.jpg
