It would certainly appear that Kathleen's branch of the family endured an incredibly tough end to 2012 as we find both of Kathleen's son-in-laws passing during this period, preceding Kathleen herself.

James Neal Rimmer, age 80, of 1606 Laura Duncan Rd. Apex, NC died Saturday November 10, 2012 at the Durham VA Hospital. He was born February 18, 1932 in Danville VA. to the late James Henry Rimmer and the late Katreen Hermoine Hudgins Rimmer. James was first married to the late Annette Marie Lamoureux Rimmer then later married Hetty Evelyn Bayliss Rimmer. James served his country in the US Airforce. He spent most of his life working for lumber mill's in Canada and the US. He loved to do carpenter work, he could build almost anything next to working with wood, James loved to fish. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. In addition to his wife Hetty he is survived by one son: Keith James Rimmer and wife Lynn of Vancover, Canada: three daughters: Sharon Anne Williams and husband Ron of Holly Springs, NC, Colleen Candance Wilkerson and husband Wayne of Richmond, VA, Sharon Lynn Shomette and husband Lou of Columbia, MD: Three brothers; Robert Samuel Rimmer and wife Loretta of Danville, VA, Charles Marshall Rimmer and wife Dorathy od Idaho Falls, ID and Henry Keith Rimmer and wife Bong Suk of Seoul, South Korea: one sister-in-law; Bonnie Rimmer of Greensboro, NC: nine grandchildren: three great-grandchildren: many aunts and uncles, numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and first wife James is predeceased by one brother; Ronald Wayne Rimmer: one granddaughter; Shannon McCrea. Robert Martin Moores - Obituary

MOORES, Robert Martin faithfully served the Seventh-day Adventist Church as Branson Hospital accounting clerk, East African Union Secretary-Treasurer, South China Island Union Mission Treasurer, Auditor for West and East Indonesia Unions, Far Eastern Division Auditor, Maritime Conference Secretary-Treasurer, Trans-European Division Associate Treasurer and Northern Asia-Pacific Division Treasurer for a total of 28 years overseas and seven years in Canada. Martin earned his Chartered Accountant degree from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia in 1971. He accumulated over one million air miles, and travelled in over 50 countries for work and vacation.
Martin was always an avid train fan and found great enjoyment riding trains in numerous countries around the world. Martin was ordained to the Gospel Ministry at the 1993 Maritime Conference Campmeeting. He was joyfully devoted to his family, to the Lord and to the church. Martin read his Bible through every year for 46 years, and always ended his letters with ―Yours in the Blessed Hope.‖ Born in Oshawa, Ontario on August 4, 1944, Martin grew up in Oshawa and greatly enjoyed his summers at Camp Frenda. He attended Kingsway College, Canadian Union College and Columbia Union College (Washington Adventist University). In 1970, Martin began his overseas service in Kenya. Over the years, the family lived in Kenya, Taiwan, Indonesia, Singapore, Canada, England, and South Korea. Forced to retire due to failing health in 2005, he and Eileen moved to Tantallon, Nova Scotia, where Martin kept active as treasurer of the Tantallon church, and assisted in treasury for the Barnesville and New Glasgow churches, and for several years edited the monthly Tantallon Church newsletter, Keeping in Touch. Martin passed away in the Infirmary (hospital) in Halifax, Nova Scotia, early on Friday morning, December 14, 2012, with congestive heart failure, and is now resting awaiting the call of the Lifegiver. Martin was predeceased by his infant son, Robert Craig; his father, Frederick Moores; his stepfather, Louis Moores; his mother, Dorothy (Elliott) Moores, and his nephew, Peter Mueller. He sadly leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife of 46 years, Eileen (nee Bayliss); his three daughters, Heather (Ken) Harrington, Holly (Ben) Bruestle, and Merrilee (Dean) Moores; his three grandchildren; his brother, Clarence Edward (Joan) Moores; his sister, Glenda (Keith) Madgwick, and his nieces, uncles, aunts and cousins.

Hi Maria,

That is fascinating and really quite moving to read that the nature of Hetty's tragic young death clearly remained with her brother William/Bill throughout his life. I'm pleased that you've been able to read and learn of the actual facts, it was a truly terrible accident for all involved.

Its also very poignant that the old family picture we have on the website includes Hetty, I've not seen any others but perhaps this is the only picture of Hetty that exists.

I'm reading a book by Richard Paul Evans called "Miles to Go" right now. In it he mentions Kellogg, Idaho. and the Bunker Hill Mining Company. Had I not read this thread and followed the story of the Bayliss family, it wouldn't have meant anything to me, but I must admit that when he mentioned this town he really grabbed my attention. The book is only fiction, but I thought it was interesting that twice in a matter of months the name of this town has come to my attention. Funny how these coincidences occur!

On Hugh Price Varker's WWII draft registration card it shows a Maude Varker at the same address in Kellogg.  I think she must be his second wife:

'Kellogg, Idaho, Feb. 8 (Special.)- Jack Clemson, son of Mrs. Hugh Varker, was married to Beulah Hendry Friday night in the Episcopal church, the Rev. Thomas Scott officiating.  Dick Clemson, brother of the groom, and Mrs. Norma Pherigo, sister of the bride, were attendants.  Mrs. Clemson has been employed as clerk in the post-office and he has been employed at the Sullivan zinc plant.  The couple are graduates of Kellogg high school and will make their home here.  A reception at the Varker home followed the ceremony.'

So presumably Maude had previously been married to a Mr Clemson.

The following immigration record form 1934 is very interesting as it looks as if Beulah is attempting to travel from the US into Canada but is actually refused entry.

It records that She has no money or effects in her possession and the reason for travel is 'health'.

Also it gives us a number of addresses:

Back on the Varker branch I have located a couple of newspaper clippings.

Firstly Beulah in 1936 (Shoshone County Newspaper):



Just 44, another tough time for Ada and Joseph no doubt, outliving a second child.

Then Beulah and Hugh's second son Joseph (Spokane Daily Chronicle - Mar 18, 1980)



It would suggest Josephs wife (name yet unknown) has died though confirms one daughter, and three grandchildren (presumably Sandra's though not specified).

You've been doing great work unearthing all those bits about the Varkers and Eytels, well done!  Here are a few more bits of the jigsaw for you:

Charles Eytel and 'Lillie' Baylis married on 1 April 1911 in Victoria, BC, according to Ancestry's BC marriage index.  This was before the Canadian 1911 census was taken (June), so you might expect them to be on the 1911 census as a married couple.  I've not managed to find them yet.  Nor have I found Lily on passenger lists, but she was presumably the first of the family to emigrate.

Jos. Bayliss (transcribed as J.C. Baylers on Ancestry!), 42, married, born Nov 1867 England, was in Victoria BC in 1911 with [his brother?] James(?) Bayliss, James' wife 'Roda' and Roda's widowed father.  His date of arrival is given as 1911.  This ties in with a passenger list showing a 43 year old Joseph Baylis arriving at Halifax, Nova Scotia,  on 22 March 1911, aboard the 'Grampian'.

Ada L. Bayliss (45), William A. (13), Hubert G. (5) and Beulah (19) followed the next year, arriving at Quebec on the 'Megantic' in June 1912.  If they didn't leave until 1912, they should be on the English 1911 census somewhere . . . but where?

We can see the that they have also obviously moved to the US from Canada and are in Kellogg, Idaho - the return indicates they moved to the US in 1920. They have three children Harold, Joe and Keith. Hugh's occupation looks like 'Lead Miner'?

So, the tree looks abit like this I think:



I don't have a record yet but have a lead that Harold may have married a Marion Joy Johns.

Could it be that Keith was a casualty of WW2 with his young death in 1942?

What a tragic accident, and one I'm sure my grandparents (May and Tom) would have remembered all their lives.

Interestingly, one of my friends was Stephanie Scroggs. Her father was Ivor, who would have been born around the same time as my Dad, 1920 or thereabouts, but Arthur Scroggs could well have been her grandfather's brother or cousin. (I don't remember her grandfather's name but I don't think it was Arthur.) Also the other playmate, Edith Dore, was likely related to Billy Dore and I do remember him and his wife Gertie.

It will be interesting to find out where the family members settled once they came to Canada.
