It's been a while since we we're looking at the Oliver/Barrett links, but I had previously raised a question around where Charlotte 'Elsie' Barrett (formally Griffin, nee Pittock) is laid to rest - despite the misleading death record on ancestry 'Lynette' confirmed she stayed in Stonesfield until her death and whilst visiting Stonesfield this week I indeed found the (I must have walked by it 100 time before but just hadn't seen it).
So interesting both Hedley and Elsie are laid to rest with their first partners in marriage.
Welcome! I'm so sorry for the delayed response, thanks for joining us here.
Thanks so much for sharing that information about 'Auntie Elsie', that's much appreciated, its always nice to get the information first hand.
Did you also spot your grandparents Mary and Ron are mentioned in another thred titled ''Methodist Olivers'?
Hope we can share some more Oliver information - there is a picture of Henry Hunt and his wife Fanny (nee Oliver) in the Picture Gallery, and their family, including Mabel who is of course you're great grandmother - I expect you have probably seen it before, its a fabulous picture.
All the Oliver folk seem to be lying low at the moment, so I thought I'd better say hello and welcome to the forum. Hopefully you won't have to wait too long before some of those Olivers reappear.
Sorry this is so brief, but I have to go and make some supper before I settle down to watch tonight's 'Who Do You Think You Are?'
Bye for now
Jane

Hi Shane, Charlotte or "Auntie Elsie" as I knew her stayed in Stonesfield until her death and lived next door to my grandparents Ronald Evins and Mary Evins (nee Hunt), Auntie Dorothy (Dot) and Uncle Mike had two children Michael and Angie
Yes, that's "Baker" Barrett. I didn't realise that he was still baking bread in the '70's. He and his wife would load up their van with the fresh crusty bread and then deliver it around the village. I remember the large wicker baskets they carried from door to door with a selection of loaves for the housewives to pick from.
In the 1950's two Osborne ladies ran the Post Office which was on Boot Street at that time. One of them may have been Miss Mabel Osborne.
You're right, Shane. The pictures brought back loads of memories. Thanks so much.
You had mentioned before that you recalled a Harold Barrett who was a Baker in Stonesfield, we'll these two images will probably bring back those memories:
These pictures were taken at the old bakery at the top of Well Lane. They were taken in 1972. the pictures shows a loaves from the last batch to be baked. The second picture is Harold with a Miss Mabel Osbourne.
Apparently all the children used to like him as he would take a basket of sweets with him on his delivery's to give out. It seems he was also quite renowned for his delectable dough cakes and large jam tarts - yum!
For completeness I thought I would search through the remaining Barrett brothers and sisters marriages to see if there were any more immediate Oliver marriages/connections.
It appears not, though herewith are the marriage details which if nothing else will I'm sure bring back memories of these folks:
1887, William Ernest married Violet May Oliver, daughter of Francis William and Minnie Oliver, 1924
1889, John Spencer - not yet identified
1892, Edward married Doris Minnie Oliver, daughter of Francis William and Minnie Oliver, 1921
1895, Eva married Thomas W Turner, 1951 (?)
1897, Headley married Mabel Hunt, daughter of Henry and Fanny Hunt, 1921
1899, Ellen 'Nellie' Sarahmarried Herbert A Tidmarsh, 1920
1900, Gilbertmarried Bernice M Healey, 1925 (?)
1903, Grace Margaret married John W Gardner, 192
1908, Wilfred Thomas married Edith Constance Oliver, daughter of Ernest Frederick and Ethel Oliver, 1943
There is however an additional interesting Oliver connection here, pointed out to me by Neil Gilbert (Messageboard newbie and Barrett family researcher).
The nine brothers and sisters father was Joseph b.1860, Joseph's father was Joseph b.1830 and his mother was Sarah Jane b.1825 - and what was Sarah Jane's maiden name? - you guessed it, Oliver.
So, the nine brother and sisters grandmother on the Barrett side was also an Oliver.
Here's a diagram to illustrate:
As you see Sarah was previously married in 1846 to Thomas Langham. Tracing through we find Thomas' death record soon after their marriage in 1847, some additional information is provided in the register, 'fell from a house'.
So, the Oliver/Barrett Stonesfield connections increase further.
I think Barb you had mentioned that you thought Headley Barrett remarried after Mabel died 1957 - well, it would seem you're spot on with that.
Here's a diagram to help explain:
So, Headley remarried Charlotte E L Pittock who I believe was more commonly known as 'Elsie'.
Headley and Elsie married in 1958, both were widows, Elsie was previously married to Arthur Griffin who died in 1951.
I believe Elsie had 3 children with Arthur, Harold, Lorna and Colin (Lorna possibly married a Charles J Hughes in 1955) - maybe someone recalls these folks?
As we know Headley died in 1976, I have also located a death registration of Charlotte E L Barrett in 1991 in Crawley West Sussex so it looks like Else left the Stonesfield area.
So, an Oliver, Barrett and Griffin family mix here. Thanks, Shane
Remembered today that "Baker" Barrett was Harold Barrett and not Edward Barrett. Sorry I sent you on a wild goose chase. I still can't place Edward. Will continue to think about it.
I've just received email confirmation (from Stonesfield no less!) that Dorothy Barrett's husband was Mike Robinson and he was the Manager of Barclays in Woodstock and then in Bicester. He passed away a few years ago. Don't have names of the children, but you will maybe come up with those when you put his name in place.
You can now add Ken and Phyllis as children of William Ernest and Violet May (see Methodist Olivers thread). Yeah! I love how this information keeps growing.
Although Ernie, Hedley and Wilf were all farmers, I'm wondering if Edward wasn't "Baker" Barrett who lived at the top of Well Lane across the road from the Methodist Chapel. I think his wife was Doris, but I don't recognize him from the picture, so I may be completely off track with this one.
What a wonderful photo. I remember Ernie, Hedley and Wilf but never knew they were brothers. Actually they all look familiar (or have a "Stonesfield" look about them). I'll just have to study the family trees and see if my memory kicks in with more information.
Great find. Thanks for posting it for the rest of us to see.
We've seen lots of examples where familar family names crop up in marriages throughout the generations, however, one particular family of 'Barrett boys' appear to have had a particularly strong passion for 'Oliver girls'.
This photo of 9 Barrett brothers and sisters is from one of my Stonesfield books and gives us the luxury of being able to put some faces to names on this item:
From left to right are Ernest, John, Edward, Eva, Hedley, Nellie, Gilbert, Grace and Wilfred.
We know of at least 4 Barrett/Oliver links here:
William Ernestmarried Violet May Oliver, daughter of Francis William and Minnie Oliver (see Richard Barratt Oliver thread)
Edward married Doris Minnie Oliver, daughter of Francis William and Minnie Oliver (see Richard Barratt Oliver thread)
Hedley married Mabel Hunt, daughter of Henry and Fanny Hunt )(nee Oliver) (see Oliver and Hunts thread))
Wilfred Thomasmarried Edith Constance Oliver, daughter of Ernest Frederick and Ethel Oliver
Despite having images of the the Barrett Boys sadly we don't have a full set of images for the Oliver girls.
The diagram below shows where Edith Constance Oliver fits in to the overall tree, she is the great-granddaughter is Waterloo Joseph, grand-daugther of Job who's army records are included the 'Army Records' article, niece of John Joseph who's cricket medal is shown in the '10 year old cricket medal' article and cousin of R.E.Oliver who we've previously discussed concerning her time at Henry Box School.
Edith Contance Oliver and Wilfred Thomas Barrett
For completness here are the trees for the other Olivers:
Mabel Hunt and Hedley Barrett
Violet May Oliver and William Ernest Barrett Doris Minnie Oliver and Edward Barrett
