Hello Linda ,

Thanks for your email . I heard that the community was looking to buy the White Horse , but didn't realise it had succeeded .

As I visit one of my cousins in Stonesfield , usually when my sister comes over from Italy  , My Mum comes along as well . Hopefully we can get along to the White Horse , when it opens.  Your Grandfather would have had to ask permission , if He was on the army reserve to emigrate to Canada. I found the same issue with a James Hunt .

I will have a look though the posts regarding Canada . When I was researching my Great grandfather , I found a 1918 electoral roll with the absence voters page showing the units and service numbers of the men on active service, Very useful for finding service records. Was puzzled why Phillip Oliver was shown as being in the Canadian Scottish regiment ? So managed to trace his Canadian service record , his discharge address is given as 947 Foul Bay Road , Oak Bay .  Also known as Oxford Cottage , which  linked me to this website.

I would really interested if there are any Further Oliver Family History days.

Best Wishes

Peter

Hello Peter

I'm not able to help with your Hunt family but thought you may be interested to hear about the White Horse pub in Stonesfield. You don't say where you are now living so maybe you are still local and you are up to date with Stonesfield news. The White Horse closed down quite a while ago and there has been a long campaign by the village to purchase the pub and use it as a village hub as well as a pub. They have now achieved this and renovations are in progress. There have been several articles in the local press about this and the history of the pub.

My Grandparents. Fred and Elizabeth (nee Oliver) Rogers also went to Vancouver Island in 1913 and came back in 1915. They came back because of WW1. My Grandfather was in the Army Reserve so was expecting to be called up. My Grandmothers sister and brother also went to Vancouver Island but later returned to England. It seems that many of the Stonesfield Olivers decided to give Canada a try and their descendants still live in Canada. At one of our Oliver Family History days a few years ago we were given a talk about the Oak Bay building company which was started by a Stonesfield Oliver. I think if you look at some of the previous Posts on this website you may find more information.

The first photo in the gallery on this website is of my Oliver family. My Grandmother is in the middle of the back row. Her sister, Elsie, on the left of the photo and her brother John(Jack) the little boy in the middle, also went to Vancouver Island.

Good to hear from you. I live in Oxfordshire just a few miles from Stonesfield and my son moved to Stonesfield last year so we are still walking in the steps of our ancestors.

Linda

Hello ,

My name is Peter Hunt , I am really interested in the picture 11/32 of the Hunt family in the Gallery on the website. Henry Hunt and his wife Fanny Oliver are my Great Great Grandparents.

My Great Grandfather is John Henry Hunt , the eldest Son who is missing from the picture and has emigrated to Canada . I have done some research and discovered that he sailed to Canada on the 13/1/1913 with Louisa Oliver, whose family had the White Horse pub in Stonesfield . They married at Oak Bay in Canada 13/9/1913 and returned to Stonesfield with 3 children in September 1915. I believe Ted's full name is Francis Edmund Hunt , he was a pre war member of the Queens own Oxfordshire Hussars and would have been Mobilised at the start on WW1 . So the photograph must have been taken between 13/1/1913 and the Start of WW1 ?  I remember meeting  Bernard Hunt and Annie Hunt (Capes) , as a child.

Would be really interested if any one has any information , especially about Canada .As we may have a  connection to the Carcay and Woodburn families in Canada ?
