Well I have another Oliver DNA match from the U.S. This Oliver famlily came originally from Rolleston in Staffordshire. There is a photo of an Edward Oliver born Rolleston 1811- died 1877. To me there is an Oliver like ness. Try google Edward Oliver born 1811 Rolleston Staffordshire. See what you think.

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly, Gareth. DNA testing certainly seems a potentially useful new tool for genealogists. Ancestry's way of classifying matches sounds very basic, though! I'll have to look into whether FamilyTreeDNA etc. give more helpful results.

It is interesting that you mention the name Fiske for I am descended from a Frances Fisk(e) who married Robert Newark or Newrick in the parish of Burgh Castle (sometimes in Norfolk, sometimes in Suffolk) in 1763.  I don't know where Frances was from, and only have a rough date of birth (1737) from her reported age at death. There's a lot more online since I last looked for her, so I'll have to see if I can find any new leads.

Best wishes

Jane

Hi Jane, Well Ancestry list DNA matches as close relation, third or fourth generation, or distant cousins. My connection with these people is listed as distant cousins. I have though had some interesting results. My grand mother Lilian Oliver's mother was born a Masterson her mother was a Burgess born in suffolk. the earliest Burgess great grandfather was an Abraham Burgess who married Deborah Fiske at Brundish Suffolk. The Fiske line goes back to a Simon/Symond Fiske of Laxfield Suffolk born 1399. I have matched DNA with a Fiske who also has Simon/Symond Fiske as her ancestor. In her list of names Fiske is the only name she shares with me. Also my DNA shows that I have 10% scandanavian genes and the Fiske origins are Danish as Fiske is the name of a fisherman. Of course sometimes relationships are hard to work out where there are no connecting names. Or there might be many names matches so it then is impossible to see where the connection is. It would be interesting if other Olivers had DNA tests as it would be then possible to see where there are definite connections.

Regards

Gareth

That's really fascinating, Gareth. Do the test results give you any indication of how closely related those other Olivers are to yours, and how long ago any common ancestor might have lived?

(I'm not descended from the Stonesfield Olivers myself, but am very interested in using DNA for genealogy . . . and wondering whether to bite the bullet and send off for a test kit.)

Well following on from my DNA match to an Oliver family in the USA and a John Oliver born 1676. I have other connections with the Oliver name. These are both in this country and the United States. One involves a FRANCES OLIVER born in WARWICKSHIRE 1661 . Married a John Birch of Birmingham in 1682. This families descendants emigrated to the West Indies and then to the US.

Another link is to a family of Olivers in Sussex. Here again I share DNA and the only connection appears to be the Oliver name.
WILLIAM OLIVER born Heathfield Sussex 1665
THOMAS OLIVER born Heathfield Sussex 1698
JOSEPH OLIVER born Warbleton Sussex 1737
HANNAH OLIVER born Dallington Sussex 1780
STEPHEN OLIVER born Warbleton Sussex 1802
MARY M OLIVER born Dallington Sussex 1844
WILLIAM OLIVER born Warbleton Sussex 1862
MARY KATE OLIVER born Heathfield Sussex 1905

These Oliver families must be branches of our family

Gareth

Hello to all. Just recently I had a DNA test for my tree on the Ancestry Site. Has anyone else  done this? It has been interesting. The results showed that I had 80 close matches and 200 and something distant cousins. The trouble is it is sometimes difficult to find a match or even impossible where names dont add up. That was until last night when I was trawling through distant relatives and I found an Oliver match in the USA. It was the only name that occured in both our trees, and my search commenced with Elizabeth OLIVER born in 1812 in Tennessee, she died 1888 in Bradley Jackson Illinois, she was the daughter of Durrett OLIVER of Caswell North Carolina  1787-1847. His father was a Douglas OLIVER born Carolina 24/2/1753 died Oliver Springs , Anderson Tennessee. His father was Nicholas OLIVER born Caroline Virginia died 1807 Halifax Virginia.

The line continued through Richard OLIVER Caroline  Virginia , Nicholson 1705 King William Virginia to John OLIVER BORN 1676 died 1748 Caroline Virginia his wife Elinor 1680-1751.

I share these genes as you all must too. I am going to try and find out more about them. There must be something more in the USA.

Gareth
