Hi Shane:

I remember the youth quizzes (a bit like Trivia Nights) and I think Stonesfield Youth Club did very well.  I don't remember this particular evening of the cosmetic demonstration but you might be interested to hear that one of the models, Rachel Huckins, is the granddaughter of Miriam Shearer.  In the group photo, yes you're right, I'm the second from the left.  I'm not 100% sure of the girl on the left but it may be Susan Barrett.  If it is, then she's the granddaughter of Hedley Barratt and Mary Evins' niece.   In the middle of the group photo is Brenda Walton, then Patricia Nunn (whose father John Nunn was involved with the Stonesfield Band) and on the right is Pauline Berry.  The last three names have not come up on the website (yet), so may not be Oliver relations.

Thanks for the little trip down 'memory lane'.

Hi Barb,

Glad you enjoyed seeing those - and as for any surprises for this year, oh indeed, we'll just have to wait and see what I might have up my sleeves!

But in the meantime, here is another couple of pieces from the Witney Gazette early 1960's:

January 12th 1962

February 9th 1962

Do you remember this Barb? I wonder if that might be you second from the left in the group of 5 girls? do you recall the names of all the girls?

Hi Shane:

OMG!  We didn't get the Witney Gazette when I was at home so I had no idea all this information was there.  It looks as if it's all school related so the headmaster must have been the person submitting it to the newspaper.  Yes it does bring back a few memories...I think I have a photo (in a box somewhere) of the sports team that went to Finstock, and most of the people I work with now (and probably back through the ages) would be amazed to learn that I once won a prize in a handwriting contest!  How things have changed.

I do remember when you introduced Kathleen and Phyllis to their cousins from North America.  What an emotional moment that was.  Any surprises up your sleeve for this upcoming History Day?   I guess we'll have to wait and be there to find out.

Thanks again for the amazing information which appears on this messageboard.

Barb

Hi Barb,

Aha, Kathleen's sister, I see! Yes, Kathleen was at the last Oliver Day and is hoping to come to next, it was Kathleen and Phyllis Morris (Granddaughters of Frank Oliver) who we united with their cousins Richard from the US and Margaret from Canada.

I see you made the papers yourself Barb in that 1958/1959 period for whole variety of good things:

1. Music

'Four Stonesfield children were successful in the examinations held last month by the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music held in Oxford. They were Barbara Harris, Norma Hanks and David Hanks who passed in Grade I and Caroline Griffin who passed in Grade II'

barbara1.jpg

2. Handwriting

'Children of Stonesfield School recently won prizes in a national competition. They were Barbara Harris and Judy Mark (junior handwriting), Susan Barrett and Stephen Scarrott (junior art) and Michael Ogden and Rita McShane (infant art)'

barbara2.jpg

3. Sports

'A party of Stonesfield School children and their parents went to Finstock on Saturday to take part in an inter-school sports arranged by the Finstock fete committee. They were Celia Godfrey, Alan Price, Christopher Mollart, John Evins, Patrick Franklin, Daphne Hanks, Sheila Hanks, Marilyn Moss, Caroline Baker, Norma Moss, Janet Moss, Stephanie Scroggs, Judy Moss, Susan Barrett and Barbara Harris'

barbara3.jpg

4. Rose Queen

'A procession of children, led by the Rose Queen, Barbara Harris, walked from the school to the Manor, to the accompaniment of music from the school recorder band'

barbara4.jpg

5. Competitions

'Mrs D.Baker of Woodstock Road gave the prize for a competition which was run by Miss Judith Marks and Miss Barbara Harris; the prize winner was Mrs. C Franklin'

1958_1.jpg

I wonder if those bring back memories Barb!

I think the Julie Oliver mentioned is the daughter of Stan and Millie Oliver.  They lived in Woodstock Road. There were three girls in the family:  Julie, Stephanie and Kathleen.  I think both and Julie and Kathleen still live in the village.  (I think Kathleen was at the last Oliver Family History Day.)

Hi All,

I have also found a reference to a Julie Oliver in Stonesfield in the late 1950s editions of the Witney Gazette.

I don't believe I have come across Julie to date and I can't immediately place her within the family tree - I wonder if anyone recalls Julie and any other information about her i.e. parents, that might help us place her?

1. Stonesfield Dramatic Society

'Julie Oliver, the youngest member of the company, had an exacting role as the mermaid heroine but carried it with the aplomb to be expected of one who thinks nothing of swimming form London Rover to the Mediterranean'

Can anyone help?

Thanks
Shane

Hi Jane,

First up, can I just make a point of welcoming you into the '200+ club' (a 200+ club of two, you and I!) as I see today you moved passed 200 posts on the messageboard here - without doubt each post has been hugely helpful, informative and insightful and we would not be where we are with our Oliver knowledge without your help and guidance through some tricky challenges, thank you.

Yes, you make a very good spot on the Mr. J. Oliver there, and I can place that Mr J Oliver immediately, he is included as part of this thread http://oliverfamilyhistory.activeboard.com/t59346300/william-edgar-oliver/ and you will see him as the eldest son of Allan Thomas Oliver in this tree diagram:

domtree.jpg

Sadly you will see that John passed away just December last year so we no longer have the option of asking him personally, but his wife, children and siblings are all still alive and some still in our area so I'm sure we could get some confirmation from them as to whether their Mr. J. Oliver was involved with the Charlbury Evergreen club. As he is part of the Combe branch of Olivers it would make the newspaper article wrong, but that wouldn't be the first time hey!

So, I'll take that as the next course of actions on this one.

Thanks

Shane

In this previous thread (http://oliverfamilyhistory.activeboard.com/t43545712/the-folk-of-stonesfield-in-1958-a-chance-to-reminisce-perhap/) we also had a James Oliver that we couldn't place, who lived at the Tewer, could this be the same James? The newspaper mentions he emigrated with his family, perhaps there could be descendants living in Australia still? I do now actually see a James Oliver who lived in Stonesfield at this time but he appears to have died in Stonesfield in 1962, so did he and his family not travel? or is this a different James?

The only Oxfordshire Olivers who I can find emigrating at that time are not from Stonesfield but from Combe: John Oliver (b.22/8/27), bricklayer, with his wife Barbara (b.1928) and children Mark (b.1952) and Glynis (b.1953) of 2 Square Firs, Combe, left Southampton on 4 November 1958 on the MV 'Fairsea', bound for Australia.

Is the newspaper wrong or did another Oliver family from Stonesfield go too? (or intend to go, as you said, Shane).

Re. Evergreen clubs, they seem to have been associated with the British Red Cross.  The 'Red Cross Evergreen Club' in Cirencester opened in 1947 for 'old people of 65 or over who want a friendly chat over a cup of tea or a game of whist or cribbage'.

Hi All,

Browsing through some late 1958 copies of the Witney Gazette I found several snippets of Oliver interest and the mention of one or two folks that I can't 100% place - I wonder if anyone might be able to help?

1.

The Week in Charlbury - Evergreen Club

'The occasion was also marked by a presentation to Mr. J.Oliver, of Stonesfield. Mr. Oliver, who has been a good friend to Charlbury evergreens is shortly emigrating to Australia with his family'

1958_2.jpg

In this previous thread (http://oliverfamilyhistory.activeboard.com/t43545712/the-folk-of-stonesfield-in-1958-a-chance-to-reminisce-perhap/) we also had a James Oliver that we couldn't place, who lived at the Tewer, could this be the same James? The newspaper mentions he emigrated with his family, perhaps there could be descendants living in Australia still? I do now actually see a James Oliver who lived in Stonesfield at this time but he appears to have died in Stonesfield in 1962, so did he and his family not travel? or is this a different James?

Also, on an aside, has anyone heard of 'Evergreen clubs' before? that's something new to me.

2.

The Week in Stonesfield - Funeral

'The funeral of Mr. Albert Oliver of the Timberyard, Churchfields, who died after a long illness last Friday, took place on Monday at St. James' Church. Chief mourners were Mrs. M. Oliver, Mrs. E. Cooper, Mr. T. Scarrott, Mr. J. Oliver and Mr. J. Hunt. Mr. Oliver who was 58, was an employee of the Southern Electricity Board. He is survived by his widow, stepson and step-daughter'

1958_4.jpg

Also in this previous thread from 1958 (http://oliverfamilyhistory.activeboard.com/t43545712/the-folk-of-stonesfield-in-1958-a-chance-to-reminisce-perhap/) were had an Albert Oliver of the Timberyard that we couldn't place. The newspaper reports gives us some additional information and I think it likely that Albert is the brother of William who ran the Whitehorse pub for many years, so he would be Uncle to Ron Oliver, William and his son Ron have both been discussed on the messgaeboard and website before. I think Albert married a Maud  Caroline Adams (her second marriage) which ties with the lead mourner Mrs. M. Oliver. I wonder of this will remind anyone of him?

3.

Women's Institute

'The Vice-President, Mrs. A Oliver, presided over 36 members at the last monthly meeting last Tuesday week in the Village Hall. Two new members, Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Hunt were welcomed. Members were asked to volunteer to collect for the British Empire Cancer Campaign.

1958_3.jpg

Here we see a Mrs. A. Oliver as Vice President of the Stonesfield WI - does anyone recall Mrs. A. Oliver? The James Oliver above in point 1 was married to an Annie (nee Kite) so perhaps this is her?. Interestingly, I think that the wife of the James I mention above in point 1 died in 1959, so perhaps due to Annie falling ill the emigration to Australia did not happen, hence why we also see he death of James registered in Stonesfield in 1962? Or perhaps Mrs. A. Oliver is someone different completely?

4.

The Week in Stonesfield - Jumble Sale

A jumble sale in aid of the school childrens Christmas Party was arranged last Saturday afternoon by the Headmaster and staff of the County Primary School. Stall Helpers were Mrs M. Wastie, Mrs M. Shearer, Mrs. K Hanks, Mrs L. Moss, Mrs. P Davis, Mrs. W Griffin, Mrs. J Godfrey, Mrs. E Oliver, Mrs. C Franklin, Mrs. M Hazel, Mrs. P Scroggs, Mrs L. Partlett and Mrs A. Griffin.

Mrs D.Baker of Woodstock Road gave the prize for a competition which was run by Miss Judith Marks and Miss Barbara Harris; the prize winner was Mrs. C Franklin.

The profit realised on the sale was £17.7.6d.

1958_1.jpg

The Barbara Harris mentioned is of course our own 'Barb' here on the messageboard - I see you rubbing shoulders with those Griffin's Barb!, Miriam (Shearer nee Griffin), Kathleen (Hanks nee Griffin), Maisie (Wastie nee Griffin) and Winnie (Griffin nee Goves). The newspaper article doesn't tell use what the competition was that you ran, do you recall the competition?, the jumble sale?, the day? - guess you were about 10/11, would be good to hear any recollections.

And anything else anyone else might be able to or like to add to any of the above would be great!

Thanks,

Shane
