I have researched four great uncles on my mother's and father's parents side so far and Phil mentioned a great uncle Oliver, so now I shall research this loss a but further and see if I can get a CWG Certificate to put up here to remember him.
My mistake here and unforgivable as I've only just noticed following your comments. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. The date should be 1914. He joined the Grenadier Guards in 1909. After serving his period of army service he was transferred into the Army Reserve in 1912 but was recalled and posted to the 2nd Battalion on 12th August 1914. He died of wounds near Ypres on 17th November 1914. The report I have is that the Battalion had been fighting incessantly from 21st October to 16th November. The Brigade Commanders tribute states: "On the 17th before the attack they threw over 200 big shells in and around my Headquarters and for one and a half hours it was pretty horrible, but the dug-outs saved us, though my signal officer and 13 men were wounded and 2 killed at the door of my dug-out." Philip is buried in Poperinghe Old Military Cemetery and was awarded the Mons Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
