Hello Margaret

Glad to see that another Oliver descendant has found the website.

If you haven't already done so look at the Family History Day section.  You will see a video of the 2010 Family History Day and a group photo of us at the 2011 Family History Day.

As you will see from the photo there are still quite a few Oliver's and Oliver descendants in Oxfordshire.

Looking forward to seeing your photo's.

Linda

Helo Shane,

Thank you so much for your interesting and informative response to my note.  I look forward to hearing more details about my Oliver relatives.

I am familiar with both of the houses that you mentioned.  The one that I mentioned is 742 St. Patrick Street.  It was built in 1924.

I have a wonderful photograph of Philip, his wife, Anne Reece, and my father, Philip.  Should I send it in my next message?

My husband and I hope to visit England in two years and plan to visit Stonesfield.  Where are you located?

Thanks again for your quick response.

Margaret

Hi again Margaret,

I'm not sure how far you have researched back or how much you have discovered yet, however, if its of help herewith is a diagram illustrating the immediate family of your grandfather Phillip Barrett Oliver:

rbo1.jpg

All but one of Richard Barrett Oliver and his wife Mary's children emigrated and married in Canada:

  • Thomas Francis Richard Oliver, married Harriet (Hattie) Eloise McGillivary, his second wife was Harriet Susanna Hann
  • Charles Ernest Oliver, married Edith Banks
  • Sarah Ann ('Nancy') Oliver, married John Henry Kirby
  • Ellen Oliver married, Percy Tufnell Whittington, later she married Cecil Cuming
  • Philip Oliver, married Anne Reece (as you of course know!)
  • Edith Emma Oliver,  married George Edwin Deakin
  • Fanny or Frances Oliver married Albert Sydney Boarman/Boorman

One son Francis stayed, lived, married and rasied a family in Stonesfield.

There are slightly more details on some of the above in different threads of the messageboard also.

I wonder also if you have located or ever seen your grandfather Philips attestation papers on the Canadian Soldiers of WWI database? Here are the links:

Page 1 Link

Page 2 Link

On the topic of St. Patrick Street, when I was looking at a map earlier today I noticed that the next street to St. Patrick Street is called Oliver Street, I wondered if this was possibly named after our Olivers, with them having been involved in construction of several houses in the area etc.

It seems that the street is named after a W.E Oliver, the first reeve of Oak Bay (1906 and several years after http://www.webturf.com/oakbay/history/encyclopedia/o.shtml#oliver). So whilst he isn't one of the Olivers in the above tree I will try to look into him a bit more to see where he was born etc and whether there is any link to our Olivers.

It would be wonderful to see your photo of Philip and family, you're of course more than welcome to post it here on the messageboard, though equally if you would be happy for it to be included in the Picture Gallery along side the growing number of fantatstic photo kindly shared please email me a copy at oliverfamilyhistory@ntlworld.com and it'll be a pleasure to add it in.

That's also great to hear that you're planning a trip to England, and specifically to Stonesfield. I live literally a stones throw away, 5-6 miles from Stonesfield, so when you come to firm up plans if I can be of any help beforehand or if you liked to meet up and I can help show you around a little, please just let me know, that would be no problems at all.

Okay, speak again, bye for now,
Shane

Hi Margaret,

Great to welcome you to our 'Oliver' website here, thanks for joining and posting your message.

Well, firstly you'll hopefully be pleased to hear that I am in contact with at least two further descendents of Richard Barrett Oliver; There is one who now lives in California who descends from Thomas Francis Richard Oliver, your grandfathers brother, and there is another in Victoria B.C. who descends from Saran Ann Oliver, your grandfathers sister. We'll look to put you all in contact if that's of interest!

Also, in the wider perspective of the Oliver family, there were many Oliver's across different branches who emigrated to Victoria, and there are several descendants who I am in contact with who still live in Victoria today across these different branches - places such as Oak Bay, Brentwood Bay, Campbell River, Nanaimo all spring to mind.

So Margaret, by finding the website here you really have discovered a huge number of relations, and some not too far away from you which you'll hopefully find quite exciting!

If you take a look in the Picture Gallery, the photo's that are 3rd and 4th in from the left should be of interest, these show Thomas Francis Richard Oliver, your grandfathers brother - is there a family resemblance I wonder?

Interesting that you should mention the home built by the Olivers, the below links are to homes built (and lived in) by Richard Barrett Oliver (and his family I would guess)

Oxford Cottage, 947 Foul Bay Road
http://www.heritageoakbay.ca/pages/preserve_oak_bay_heritage/ob_heritage_register/directory/pages/heritage_register0021.html

Oliver House, The Richard Oliver House, 953 St. Patrick Street
http://www.heritageoakbay.ca/pages/preserve_oak_bay_heritage/ob_heritage_register/directory/pages/heritage_register0026.html

Perhaps 953 St. Patrick Street is the one you know of - or is there another?

Okay, welcome again Margaret, and look forward to us hopefully sharing more information!

Speak again soon,
Shane

While researching our family I was excited to discover this site and see my grandfather's name.  My grandfather is Philip Barrett Oliver and my father is Philip Jesse Beattie Oliver (born 1916, died 1990 Victoria BC Canada).  His sister, Peggy,(Margaret Phillippa Maude) was born in 1915 and died in 1936 in Victoria.

My mother, Nora Oliver, is 88 and lives in Victoria.  ! was born in 1947 in Victoria. I have one sister, Christine (1950), and a brother, Michael (1955). There are 9 grandchildren (4 Olivers) and 6 greatgrandchildren.

My grandfather was a plasterer and cement worker.  One of the homes that he built still exists.  It is covered with stucco and decorated with tiles.  His company, Oliver Brothers, also worked on Oak Bay High School in 1929 and included the same decorative tiles.

I am not aware of any other Oliver family members in Victoria.
