Hi Rene and Shane:

Thank you Shane for explaining how to access the Personal Messages. I followed your directions and it worked. As a result, I have sent a message to you Rene, which I hope you will be able to find and read. (We'll probably get good at this, after a few tries!)

Barb

Hi Rene:

I have received one personal message from you which I replied to, but haven't received any others. I might be doing something wrong or missing something which I should be doing. Did you receive the personal message I sent to you? I guess that would be a good place to start.

Barb

Hi Shane and Barbara,

Just having my `fix` for the day.  Did you know that dear old Leonard Miles - teacher at Chippy was brother to Sir Bernard Miles (Actor).  that is why he usually presented prizes at various events at Chippy.

Barbara you MIGHT have received a personal message from me.  Not with it this morning so you might not have.

Regards,   Irene

Hi Shane:

I've just spent an hour looking at the Chippy School websites. What a lot of memories they brought back. Yes, you picked out Madge on the 1964 photo. I have a copy of that photo and it's about three feet long! I was in the same class as Debi Moir, but was not able to go to the reunions they have had, but from looking at the photos I don't think I would have recognized anyone. It's a good job there were names to accompany some of the photos, for I do remember the names.

I'm not related to Christine Harris, but we were in the same class throughout our years at Chippy (and that goes for all the others in that photo). I recognize myself on several of the group photos. but was having a "bad hair day" on most of them.

Thanks for bringing back lots of memories (and a few laughs).

Barb

Hi Barb,

Not sure if you took a look around the exchippy website, but the area called the 'Archive Index' (http://www.exchippy.org.uk/yearselect.html) has a few pictures from the 1959 to 1964 period, may be some faces in there you recognise and bring back some memories!

There is a 1964 school photo:
http://www.exchippy.org.uk/schoolphoto1964.html

Madge Calcutt's name is listed as someone who been identified, its not a very high resolution scan of the picture but is Madge possibly the girl in the middle of this section of the photo?

chippy2.jpg

You also mentioned Mr & Mrs Ransome, I saw there was this picture on the site, apparently taken on a school trip to Champex Lac in Switzerland.

L to R Colin Smith (English), Graham Silcox (Chemistry), Mr Treble, Wyn Miles (wife of Leonard Miles - Maths), Joan Ransome and Roland Ransome (both Geography).

chippy1.jpg

There are also some pictures from a 1959-1964 reunion that was held in 2004 http://www.exchippy.org.uk/reunion6.html, names like the following are mentioned:
Clare Hedges (Hutt)
Cicely Atwell (Maunder)
Sue Hood (Grantham)
Janice Coleman (Brice)
Peter (Jock) Hutchison
Debi Moir

Then there's also this pic from a 2003 reunion, L-R: Christine Harris; Lyn Pearce; Clare Hedges; Debi Moir; Shirley Gaden; Cicely Atwell

Christine Harris - any relation I wonder?

Not sure if that all rings any bells, just thought I point those bits and pieces out as they seem to be right years etc

Thanks,
Shane

Hi Rene:

In one of your postings (I think it might have been the Barrett/Oliver connection) you mention that we might have known one another. I don't remember you at all, but I went to Chippy School (I started in 1959 but I think you had probably left by then) so we likely have memories of some of the same teachers...Mr. Miles for Math, Mr and Mrs Ransome for Geography, Miss Harrop for biology. I also remember the kids from Combe cycling to Hanks' corner to leave their bikes in Barrett's shed, before catching the school bus to Chippy. Do you remember Henry Hawtin the bus driver?

Madge Calcutt was a friend of mine. We were in the same class throughout our years at Chippy. Gosh, that's over 40 years ago...make that 50 years ago. I was never one of Mr. Miles' best students!

Hello,

Well, I've had a quick look at Terence/Terry Oliver, of Stonesfield, and he definitely appears to be part of the bigger Oliver tree that we're all investigating.

Here's where I think he fits in (enter, colourful illustration!).

1

A couple of points of specific interest, a couple of Terrys Great Uncle's can be found with their own sections on the website.

Firstly, his Great Uncle James (1825) was the 'Cataraqui' James.

Then, his Great Uncle Stephen is who we have the goal photo of from 1871.

Lots more stories in there too I'm sure.

Okay, thats that for now ...
Thanks,
Shane

Hi Irene,

Ohhhh, you gave we just too much bait there not to want to go off an find that extra picture!

Was it this one perhaps? You're right, your hair had grown since the last photo!

Re: Terrence Oliver, I have come across his name, it was when I was talking to Micky I believe, though I've not investigated where he fits in .. I'll take a look.

There is definitely a marriage of a Terence R Oliver and a Judy Snell, in Oct-Dec 1960, in the Chipping Norton District, so I suspect you are right that the Terence you recall married Judy Snell.

Whilst touring the Stonesfield graveyards for Olivers a while back I recalled finding a Terry Oliver, I've just looked at my photo's and here is a gravestone, it seemed Terence/Terry passed in 2006.

Did you know of him/or his wife Judy?

Thanks,
Shane

Thanks for that Shane. It is a good job you didn`t see the later picture!! Even more hair on that one.

By the way do you know of a Terence Oliver born about the late 1930`s from Stonesfield? Tall and dark haired if I remember correctly.

There is a Judy Oliver in Stonesfield (approximtely the same age) - she was a Snell from Woodstock. Were they husband and Wife?

Still concentrating on my in-laws, but I still check out the Oliver Family.

Regards, Irene

Hello All,

Whilst generally browsing the internet for new things Oliver, I happened to stumble upon a website for ex-chipping Norton School Pupils http://www.exchippy.org.uk/.

It looks like a great site for any ex'chippy pupil, lots of names and photo's etc.

Well, as you do, you try and track down Olivers information don't you - and I think I struck a little peice of gold!

I do believe I've located an old school photo of our very own Irene from 1952 - wonderful stuff hey.

1

And in the same photo is John Oliver (Irene's brother I believe)

2

Full photo's and listings of names can be found on the site, here's a link to the photo's page http://www.exchippy.org.uk/schoolphotoindex.html.

Brings back many memories I'm sure Irene?

Thanks,
Shane
