Hi Shane. Yesterday I wrote to Dorothy Calcutt. We keep in touch and she always sends me her books. The latest one I enjoyed but I still think her first two - Salt of the Earth and Born in a Stable were better by far. Dorothy lives on the road going out of Combe to Woodstock. Akeman Street. Her house is a detached one settled under the wood on the right. It is the last house. She is now well over 80 years old, with a very agile mind.

Sun is out, sky is blue - seems as though I have got to go out and paint a shed while the weather is good. This is the time of year when Ancestry has to take a back seat.

Keep in touc,

Regards, Rene Oliver

Hi Irene,

Yes, is see what you mean.

The book you refer to is published by The Wychwood Press (in Charlbury) who mainly publish books about Oxfordshire.

Hi Shane, Lovely photo of Combe. It is almost identical picture to the cover of a book called `A ****tail of Village Life` by Dorothy Calcutt of Combe. Your photo shows the tree in the foreground in blossom, hers shows it a week or so later with purple leaves. I was born in one of the little cottages the other side of the Methodist Chapel along the road from where the picture was taken. Of course I was married in the Church!

The brief outline of my line shown on the web. I have no objection to - as long as the first date is correct.

Speak soon

Regards, Irene

Hi Rene,

Great, thanks for the info.

Especially for you, I've added a new picture to the frontpage of the website, its a panoramic across coombe cricket pitch towards the church and village centre, taken early on Sunday morning.

Thanks,
Shane

Hi Rene,

No problems at all, yes, I completely knew where abouts in the tree you were talking about and as I say, the 'second Mary Oliver marriage' combined with 'no William Oliver burial' is something I'm planning to have another look at when I'm next at the Oxford Records Office (look at the originals). I'll of course keep you up to date with any new info as and when that is.

Yes, I would really interested to see your line back to Thomas - I'm looking at the Finstock side at the moment actually so that would be quite timely and no doubt very helpful too.

So, how long have you been living in
Essex? do you still have family in or around the Coombe area,? its a very nice little village, do you come back much?

Look forward to hearing back,
Shane

Hi Shane, thanks for all the info. Glad you could understand my stumbling block. I got only the year of death from Two Ancestry Family Trees. I have e.mailed the Tree ownes to see if they can shed any light as to where their information came from. But I find most people do not reply. I do have a contact in Finstock who will help me once he gets a new bulb for his micro film viewer (or something). Just a thought - perhaps Williams death records come under Wilcote as some of the marriages were held there before Fin stock Church was built (around 1840/1, I think).

Would you be interested in seeing a brief outline of my family line down through Thomas?

Regards, Irene

Hi Rene,

Great to welcome you to the website and messageboard - thanks so much for joining.

It's all in its very early stages here, but hopefully it will grow over time and together we can all share information and help each other along.

So, to your question, it's an interesting one and one that I too have a question mark ot two in my To-Do-List for.

My main question on this area is, What happened to William?

I'll try and present the information I have to date and explain how I've reached where I am at the moment.

Sooo, lets start with the initial Oliver family biulding up...

Stonesfield Parish Transcripts (Baptism)
1748, Sep-04, William Oliver, Son, William & Ann

Charlbury Parish Transcripts (Baptism)
1747, Nov 4, Mary House Daughter of Eliza HAN**** of Charlbury Base Born

Stonesfield Parish Transcripts (Marriage)
1775, Sep 26, William Oliver, b, otp, & Mary Hanc-ock, sp, Finstock psh Chalbury

Stonesfield Parish Transcripts (Baptism)
1777, Jan 19, James s, William and Mary Oliver, Lab, Bn Charlbury Parish

Charlbury Parish Transcripts (Baptism)
1779, May 12, Thomas, s, William and Mary Oliver, Finstock

This is all great up to this point.

Then we see:

Charlbury Parish Transcripts (Marriage)
1784, Feb 24, Joseph Lainchbury & Mary Oliver, both Finstock, He Signs, She Marks, Wit: Charles Turner and Wiliam Lainchbury.

So, is this the same Mary Oliver that was married to William above who together had the 2 sons, James and Thomas?

Well, the records do not help us too much with clues.

Firstly, the marriage of Joseph Lainchbury & Mary Oliver sadly doesn't detail if Mary was a widow (or spinster).

Secondly, there is no a burial (that I have found) for William Oliver in the Stonesfield or Chalbury Parish Transcripts between the birth of Thomas in 1779 and the marriage to Joseph.

However, to support a 'yes it's is the same Mary', William and Mary don't have any further children after Thomas, a just 2 was quite a small family back then.

In addition, we can also find find the burial of Mary w. of Joseph Lainchbury, aged 58, in 1814.

1814, minus 58 year, brings you to 1856, the 58 may be a transposition error and it could be 68 which brings us closer to Marys date of baptism in 1747.

A check in the orginal parish register is required here to support or squash this thin thoery.

Finally, I have no other unmarried, living, Mary Oliver's around at that time.

So, some things look like it's a yes, the two Marys are the same Mary, but, there are also some missing clues to help make the 100%.

And its at that point I come back to my question mark - What happend to William?

Perhaps he joined the army, perhaps we was shipped to America, perhaps his burial was just missed from the parish register or missed in the transposition.

Either way, there's a bit more work to be done.

I hope this little brain dump gives an insight as to how I've reached where I've reached to date on this.

One question on your note that might help:

You said 'According to my information William died in 1775 aged 27.  So he could not have fathered Thomas in 1779'

Where have you found this burial? I've not got that in my records, would be interested to see where you've found that.

Okay, let me know,
Shane

Hello, I am new.  I have been researching my `Finstock` Olivers for some time.  Big stumbling block was my William Oliver bn. abt. 1750 who married a Mary (no name) bn. Finstock.  They had a son called Thomas who is my direct line.  Could  not find any details about William at all.  William and Mary Han**** kept popping up - but I dismissed them as that William was born in Stonesfield and I was always told we were nothing at all to do with  the Stonesfield Clan.

I cannot understand the following - William and Mary (Han****) according to your Tree had two sons - James bn. abt. 1776 and Thomas bn. abt. 1779.  According to my information William died in 1775 aged 27.  So he could not have fathered
Thomas in  1779.  Have we any proof at all.

Was Mary Han**** the `baseborn` daughter of Elizabeth of Charlbury.  The child was named Mary House Han**** and baptised 4th Nov. 1747.

According to my search there was a Mary Oliver bn. Fin stock abt.1746 who married a Joseph Launchbury in 1784.    IN AN IDEAL WORLD I was hoping that William did die in  1775 and then she later married Joseph Launchbury.  But that does not solve the problem of Thomas and his Father?

Am I missing something.

By the way I was born in  Combe, daughter of a William Oliver of Finstock. Went to Chippy School and know that area very, very well.  But now I live in  East Anglia and I do get VERY homesick.

Regards,  Rene
